Helping your home hit peak performance

Keeping your home comfortable and energy efficient is about more than just the heating and air equipment you own. Tyler Kime, the general manager of Standard Air, Plumbing and Insulation, said his company looks at three components when determining a home’s performance: The equipment’s ability to heat and cool the air; the ductwork’s ability to move the air throughout the house; and the insulation’s ability to keep that comfortable air inside.

“Once you have all three key components, your home will be more comfortable than ever before and use less energy to get there,” Kime said. “Our home performance analysis addresses all three areas.” In addition to their home performance analysis and energy audit, Standard Air, Plumbing and Insulation also offers service, installation and repair on air conditioning; heating systems; dehumidification; air sealing and insulation; furnace repair and boiler repair or installation; duct cleaning; water heaters; plumbing repair; indoor air quality and filtration services; and home generator repair.

Kime said Standard Air, Plumbing and Insulation started as a heating and roofing company in 1939, but they stopped doing roofing work to focus more on air conditioning when it became popular in the 1950s. Their team has more than 400 years of combined HVAC experience and 100 years of plumbing experience, as well as certifications such as the state HVAC license, Master Plumber Card, Master Gasfitter card, NATE certified technicians and Building Performance Institute (BPI) certifications.

“We are locally owned and operated and serve the Birmingham metro area,” Kime said. “My father [Tom Kime, owner of Standard Air, Plumbing and Insulation] always said that people do business with companies they like and they trust, and that has been our focus since the beginning. We have a dedicated team that focuses on treating our customers with courtesy and respect and making sure they walk away with a ‘Wow!’ experience.”

With cooler weather ahead, Kime recommended homeowners get their heating system cleaned and checked, as well as make sure their gas appliances are operating safely and efficiently. In addition, he said a home’s ductwork is the most overlooked area of its heating and cooling system. Making sure your ducts are clean and leak-free can make a big difference in the efficiency of your home.

“You can have the most efficient unit available, but it isn’t going to operate that way if it’s attached to a poor duct system,” Kime said. “We often find duct systems that leak air into unconditioned spaces such as attics and crawl spaces, which cause a myriad of problems from humidity issues and lost efficiency. We also suggest looking inside the ductwork to make sure the air you are breathing is free and clear.”

Having a home performance analysis is a chance to look at the complete picture of your home’s comfort and energy use. Kime said the team at Standard was able to reduce one home’s electric and gas utility bills by 35 percent and the home would maintain 74 degrees on a 100 degree summer day.

Standard Air, Plumbing and Insulation services the greater Birmingham area, including most of Jefferson County, part of Shelby County and the Moody area.
