Become a STAR in the theatre
Does your child like to make up stories, pretend to fight off bad guys or love to perform his or her favorite scene from a show? If so, then the Virginia Samford Theatre’s STARS Camp may be the perfect way to spend a week this summer.
Camp VST is meant to introduce the wide world of theater to beginning and intermediate theater students, ages 7 to 17.
Each week’s camp will run Monday-Friday, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and will feature classes in acting, dancing, singing, Shakespeare and improvisation. Wednesdays are elective days, where students can learn about stage combat, stage makeup, play writing and more.
Students will be taught by some of Birmingham’s best theatre instructors and performers with the goal of helping students build confidence, learn to work together and develop and explore creativity.
“Theater is such an expansive art, but most students are only introduced to the acting or singing part of it,” said Jennifer Spiegelman, VST associate education director.
“Every single student can benefit from an education in theater, even if they don’t want to become a Broadway star. Arts education is not only a wonderful tool to instill arts appreciation, but a way to enrich, enhance and cultivate a better understanding of self and community.”
The one-week sessions are June 4-8, June 11-15 and June 18-22. All sessions are Monday-Friday, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Registration fees are $295 per one-week session, and all sessions are the same. Scholarships and sibling discounts are available. With only 120 spots available for the summer, Spiegelman says the classes are usually fully booked by the end of April.
